♦- LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. YESTERDAY. Tub Council met at '2.30 p.m. PETITIONS. On the motion of Mr l'inkerton the report ofjthe Public Petitions Committse ou the petition of Suiter and others with regard ro the liqiadation of the Colonial Bank was referred to. The Council rose at 3.45 p.m. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. YESTERDAY. The House met at 2 40. BANK HOORS. Mr Barclay nave notice to ask the Government whether they would make enquiries regarding the hours of work and rates of pay in the banks of the colony. ENLARGING THE GAOLS. Mr Napier gave notice to move that further Bums of money be spent in making a permanent addition to the Terrace and Mt. Eden gaols. That steps he taken to acquire land for prisons in the vicinity of Auckland and Wellington. That the regulations be amended so as to ameliorate the condition of accused persons awaiting trial FKOZK.N MKAT. On the motion ot the Hon. T. Y. Duncau a committee was set up to consider the question of the loporo nil frozen meat and also the prices obtained for stock in both islands of the colony. MESSAGE OF SYMPATHY. Mr YVitheford moved that this House express its heartfelt sympathy and regret at the death of the New Zealanders who died during die South African war, and at the subsequent death of the men of the South African contingents who have died since their return to New Zealand, and that a copy of this resolotiou be transmitted to the nearest relatives of the deceased. The motion was agreed to on the voices. MINING ACT AMENDMENT. The Mining Act Amendment Bill, reducing the hours worked underground to seven, was committed. STATE COALMINE. The motion for the committal of the Slate Coalmines Act was agreed to on the voices. IRON DEPOSITS. The House went, into committee on the Mining Act Amendment Bill. A locg discussion took place oo clause 2, which provides for the granting of a lease of iron deposits at Farapara, in the Nelson district. Object on was raised that the clause was in the interest of the proposed Irons*nd Syndicate, hut in reply to this it was contended that inducements should be held out to the syndicate to work these deposits. Eventually the clause was amended to provide that the State may purchase at a fair price, and the Bill was paes'.d through committee. The House rose at 2.5 a.m.
