Austria regards the wholesale conversions to Protestantism as a disloyal manoeuvre. Steps are beiug taken to put a stop to the practice. General Toral, the Spanish commander, is Incarcerated in a military prison awaiting trial for surrendering Santiago de Cuba to the Americans. Russia has forbidden Jews to reside at Port Arthur and Ta-lien-wan Bay. During his journey to Cannes the Prince of Wales had half-an-hour's cordial interview with President Loubet. The Prince also visited the buildings in courie of erection for the 1900 Exhibition, including the colonial pavilion, aud made an inspection of a motor car. In the House of Commons, Mr Brodrick, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated that Britain had remonstrated with Ameriea relative to the serious effect ef the Bill making Hawaii an American customs district.
Mr Calvert, a Vic'orian, has secured a seat in the Cambridge eight oared crew. M. Lockroy, French Minister for Marine, has ordered the construction of two submarine boats subscribed for through the newspaper, the Matin.
