(by telegraph—press association), Auckland, Last Night. INDEPENDENCE DAT. At a public meeting of citizens at the Municipal Chambers, the Mayor presiding, it was resolved to present an address on the evening of 4th July at the Opera House to the American Consul, Mr Dillingham, and have also a concert, the programme comprising British and American patriotic songs. BURGLARY. The premises of H. M. Smeeton at Eirth's old mill, Queen - street, were broken into last night. All that is missing is 28s worth of coppers from the till'. PROHIBITION ORDERS. A question in regard to the service of prohibition orders was raised to-day in a charge against Walter Stimpsou, licensee of the Queen's Ferry Hotel, with supplying liquor to George E. Bentley, a prohibited person. The notice order was only addressed to the licensee of the Queen's Ferry Hotel. Mr Brabant, S.M., reserved judgment. A MAORI DROWNED. Mano, the son of Temakara, one ot Te Toia's companions, in gaol for the Hokianga disturbance, was drowned at Tio, on the Hokianga river. His boat swamped while carrying sleepers. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. John Harley, blacksmith, formerly foreman of the Auckland Fire Brigade, cut his throat in his bedroom, through business worries. He was sent to the Hospital, where he lies in a critical condition. He has a wife and family. BREACHES OF SHOP ACT. J. J. Ambury, of Ambury and English, daiiymen, and Robert Spreckley, bookseller, were fined for breaches of the Shop Hours Act. . MISREPRESENTATION. Two men were fined £1 each and costs for falsely representing themselves aa travellers on Sunday at an hotel.
