LIBEL ACTION.

(BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION). Inyekcakgill, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, the case of Rev Smellio v. E. G. McPhcrson, proprietor of the Wyndham Farmer, a claim of £IOOO damages for libel is now being heard. The facta are that certain charges, including untruthfulness and wrongful retention of money, were laid by a section of the congregation against the minister. A commission was appointed by the Syuod to hear the charges, and held an informal meeting at Wyndham. Its chairman requested that the proceedings should not be published. The Farmer, however, published a report, including the charges, which were not read, though referred to at the meeting. The defence is that the report was a fair one of the proceedings. A large number of witnesses is to be examined, and the case will last several days.
