At the Police Commission Inspector MeGovern, Sergeant Stagpoole. and Constables Roche and Grey said they had never been interfered with in the execution of their duty by anyone in authority. The latter did not know of any local constable who drank to excess. Sergeant Stagpoole said political influence was not responsible for his promotion. He had never heard constables say it was dangerous to interfere with the liquor traffic. He was sure the men would contribute to a pensions fuud. Mr Hill Goodaere said the law was better carried out in Taranaki than any place 'he knew. There had been breaches of the licensing law, but he could not specify cases. Charles Ahier thought if the police were shifted more the force would be more effective. John Duffin, ex-sergeant of police, gave evidence on the " Bird on Wing " case, but only covered old ground. The Commissioners leave for Hawera in the morning.
