TAUPIRI.

Picnic. —The Taupiri school children participated in thair annual sports on Monday, at which nearly the whole of the juvenile part of the population were present, consisting of upwards of 100 children, from the baby-in-arms to thoso verging upon manhood and womanhoojd. The weather was occasionally showery, but not sufficiently so to interfere with the sports, which consisted of races for girls and boys, jumping contests, tugs of war, and all the most populur athletic performances generally indulged in upon such occasions. The sports were held at Onslow Park, which is kept in very good condition by the Domain Board. The grounds, lately added to by a further grant of two sections from the Government, have now ana»'ea of upwards of five acres, tastefully planted with deciduous and evergreen shrubs, and protected by a substantial eight-wired fence. At intervals the children, with their parents, adjourned to the Public Hall, where all those edibles the yonng so enthusiastically enjoy and show such wonderful capacity to absorb, were supplied in profusion, while music supplied by some of the visitors lent an additional charm to . the gathering. All the youngsters, by some means or other, mauaged to get possession of a prize, whether successful or unsuccessful competitors, or non-competitors, which I have no doubt they thoroughly appreciated. Upwards of £8 was collected in the district, and this sunt provided ample means to cirry out the programme very successfully, as the whole of the refreshments were provided in addition by voluntary subscription.—(A Correspondent).
