SENSATIONAL ESCAPE

FROM DETENTION CAMP. GUARD MAULED AND GAGGED. WELLINGTON, A sensational escape from the military detention camp at Trentham was made last night (Wednesday) by four military prisoners, John Larkin, Robert Ernest Larkin, Alexander Arthur Walker, and George Henry Holleyman. From what can,-be gathered, the four men suddenly attacked the guard whom they overpowered and gagged, and then got completely away. The police authorities were notified, and a sharp lookout kept, but so far no tidings of the escapees have been received. The guard is stated to have been badly mauled. The Larkins are brothers who stowed away a few weeks ago in the bunkers of a steamer leaving for Sydney. On arrival there they were not permitted to land, but were brought back to New Zealand and sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for leaving the Dominion without a permit. On expiry of the sentence a few days ago, they were handed over to the military authorities who transferred them to Trentham.
