BURGLARS ACTIVE.

CARTERTON FIRMS SUFFER. FIVE PLACES ENTERED. Burglars were again active in Carterton on Tuesday night, when various business places were broken into and money and stamps stolen. Tills and cash registers received attention, ,and in most cases a search had evidently been made for the key of the safe. All the buildings entered were on the main street. Fairly substantial sums were taken in two cases. The places which were broken into were the Red Star Service Station, Mr. H. Every’s G-arage, Burridge’s Brewery Depot, Cash Cycle Company, and Mr. W. Vaughas’s butcher’s shop. An attempt was made to enter Messrs Hill and Hughes’s garage, but the door proved too strong. Entry to the buildings was gained by forcing open a door or a window. About £5 was obtained from the safe of Mr. Every’s garage. In this instance the safe was unlocked, the money abstracted and the safe locked again. About £6 was stolen from Mr. Vaughan’s shop, where several drawers and a cash register were forced open.
