LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Burglars entered the Wairarapa High School building on Tuesday night and took about ten shillings in silver. No damage of any sort was done to the building. Entry was probably gained through an unlocked window. Ninety-five nominations have so far been received for the New Zealand golf championships, which are opening at New Plymouth on October 22. Most of the leading players have already entered but it is expected when entries close to-night that the number will be greatly increased.—(P.A.) The freedom of the borough of Kidderminster is to be conferred on the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, when he visits England. A Worcester journal states that the Kidderminster Town Council decided to confer this honour on Mr. Nash, who was born at Kidderminster and received his early education at St. John’s School. The only other living freemen of Kidderminster are Messrs Stanley Baldwin, E. M. Bruce and J. G. Coates.—(P.A.) Members and intending members of the Masterton Bowling Club are reminded that the official opening of the greens will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. The greens are in perfect condition and compare more than favourably with any greens in the Wellington district, so that players can look ■ forward to an enjoyable season. Visitors and friends are cordially invited to be present. Members are also reminded of the social evening in the Savage Club rooms to-night. Many friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hartley Myers, Mauriceville, to farewell Mrs. Robert Cameron, who has left to reside in Masterton. A delightful afternoon was spent with musical items and competitions. Afternoon tea was served amid artistic decorations of blue and gold. On behalf of the assembly, Mrs. Childs, presented Mrs. Cameron with a beautiful crystal reading lamp. Mr. Myers also expressed the regret of all at the departure of Mrs. Cameron.
The Riverside Golf Club held its annual dance on Tuesday night in the Arcade Hall. The evening was a great success and a large number of golfers and friends enjoyed a programme of modern and old-time music played by the Blue River Orchestra. A feature of the evening was a ballet dance performed by Miss Batty Holmwood's pupils led by Miss Ho Taylor. Home-made supper was provided by the lady members of the club. Messrs N. Ninnes and V. Taylor were efficient M’s.C. The annual two days’ race meeting of "the Masterton Racing Club, which is to be held at Opaki on Friday and Saturday of next week, is one of the outstanding social events of the year in the Wairarapa. Usually favoured with fine weather, it/ is an opportunity for ladies to wear npw Spring fashions in an ideal setting; The races also provide a pleasant for people to meet' one another. The nominations indicate that, with good fields, the club is assured of a successful two-days’ meeting.
The final game in the Y.M.C.A. basketball competition was played last night when Kiatere A defeated Kiatere B 34/28, after a keenly contested encounter. In a curtain-raiser, the Star Club girls defeated Technical Old Girls 20/12. After supper, the trophies were presented to the winning teams by Mr. H. M. Peacock, president of the Y.M.C.A. A dance was also held, music for tvhich was supplied by Mr. J. Barnes. Mr. P. Gaskin was M.C. Thanks Were expressed to Messrs Barnes and Gaskin and also to the ladies.
At the last meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association it was decided to send an invitation to V. JJ. McGrath to compete in the New Zealand championship tournament. McGrath is the present holder of the men’s singles title. He is also to be asked whether ho knows of any other leading Australian player who would make the trip. The secretary, Mr. H. N. Burns, was asked to draft a report on the question of New Zealand entering for the Davis Cup contest. The report is to be considered at the next quarterly meeting of the council.—(P.A.) A meeting of the Masterton Young Farmers’ Club Was held last evening, Mr. G. Blatehford presiding over an attendance of 29 members. An address was given by the Mayor (Mr. T. Jordan) on the conduct of meetings . Mr. Jordan conveyed a great deal of information about the duties of a chairman, the rules of debate, order of business and cognate matters and enlivened his discourse with many apt and telling illustrations, some of a decidedly humorous kind, drawn from his extended experience. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Jordan for his interesting and instructive address. At their next meeting, member sof the club are to debate the question: “That tractors pro more economical than horses.’’ I
