Playing in the Y.M.C.A. billiards and snooker competition last night Post Office beat Daniells by 7 games to 3. Following are the results, Post Office players mentioned first:—Billiards: Dwyer beat Marigold; Astridge lost to U'reen; Wylie beat Allen; Dean lost to MeWhinnie; Marsh lost to Sleight. Reid, S.M., to Mrs. Caroline Thomas, who sought £3OO from the North Canterbury Hospital Board. She claimed that when she was a patient in the Christchurch Hospital she was badly burned through a hot water bottle being placed on her thigh while she was unconscious. The board had paid £lOO into court.— (P.A.) 3 The Committee of the Auckland Racing Club has decided to make 7.0 the minimum weight for the Auckland Cup instead of 7.7, as previously announced. This action was taken in consequence of a pronouncement of the Minister of Internal Affairs that his recommendation in regard to the imposition of a 7.7 minimum in races should not apply this year to the New Zealand and Auckland cups. No action is to be taken by the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association in the direction of changing the headquarters from Christchurch. An unanimous decision to that effect was made at a meeting of delegates in Wellington last ' night. The proposal was advocated in a letter from the Otago Centre. A resolution was passed, however, drawing the attention of the council to the fact that an improvement in general management would be of greater advantage to the sport.—(P.A.) As a result of a stopwork meeting held by the miners, work at the Taratu Collieries, near Kaitangata, has been at a standstill since Monday morning. Under the recent legislation, mines have been working since July 1 under the Arbitration Court award of 1931. A few weeks ago the Taratu Miners’ Union applied for a new award. The demands included a seven-hour day, and on the consent of all parties at r conciliation meeting on August 8, the matter was referred to the Arbitration Court. The Kaitangata Coal Company’s mines are not affected by the dispute at present.—{P.A.) Tn a Wairarapa Table Tennis Association match played last night Town defeated Country by 34 games to 14. Following are the section results, the first figure relating to Town:—Men’s singles, 12/4; ladies* singles, 9/7; men’s doubles, 4/0; ladies’ doubles, 2/2; combined doubles, 7/1. On Saturday night the Masterton Winter Sports Club defeated the Mauriceville West Club by 18 games to 6. Following are the section results, the first figure relating to Winter Sports Club: — Men’s single, 6/0; ladies’ singles, 3/3; men’s doubles, 3/0; ladies’ doubles, 1/2; combined doubles, 5/1. A cake baking competition has been arranged by the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild. There will be three classes, fruit cake, butter sponge and no butter sponge. Owing to the generosity of Messrs Hansells, manufacturers of food flavours, prizes will be given as follow:—Fruit cake, 7s 6d first, 3s 6d second; butter sponge and no butter sponge, both 5s first and 2s 6d second. There will be no entry fee, but the cakes will become the property of the guild and will be sold at the garden party to be held at the residence of Mrs. R. C. Drummond, on October 14.
