CARTERTON SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. SIX NEW ROOMS PROPOSED. (“The Age” Special.) Advice was received at last night *h meeting of the Carterton School Committee from the Minister of Education to the effect that the Wellington Education Board had submitted to the Department an application for a grant to cover the cost of erecting six new class rooms on the Infant School site in Holloway Street. The proposals, he stated, were to receive early consideration. A reply to a request from the committee that the Department should provide four new typewriters for the secondary department stated that there were no funds for such a purpose and the committee would have to use its funds. The committee decided to purchase the typewriters, the matter being left in the hands of the headmaster and. Mr. Babbitts. The headmaster (Mr. H. Fawcett) stated that the school had £4 in hand, the proceeds from the recent ball and the staff had decided to donate that amount towards the purchase money. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the staff for its action. The Wellington Education Board reported that the school had gone up a grade and the grant for incidental expenditure would be £lB7 5s for the year, an increase of £9 ss. A vote of thanks was passed to the members of the committee who waited on the Minister as a deputation regarding a new school, especially the chairman, Mr. Blake, for the excellent way in which he had placed the position before the Minister. Accounts totalling £l4 4s 2d were passed. The secretary was authorised to order five cords of wood. The headmaster reported the roll to be: Primary, 382; secondary, 51. During the past month a meeting of members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Carterton District High School, Ladies’ Auxiliary and the school staffs of the district was held in the High School to discuss the proposed Home and Farm Arts and Crafts scheme for girls. A strong committee was set up and the scheme was being launched with considerable enthusiasm. A team in each of the three grades had been entered for the annual seven-a-side Rugby tournament of Wairarapa primary schools to be held on Saturday, July 11, at Carterton, commencing at 9 a.m.
