HOCKEY.
FIJIAN LADIES AT EKETAHUNA TO-MORROW. OPENING MATCH OF TOUR. To-morrow will be a red-letter day for hockey in Eketahuna as the visiting Fijian ladies will open their tour of New Zealand with a match against the Bush ladies. The match will start at 2 p.m. Bush will be fielding a strong eleven and should make a bright showing against the tourists. The Bush team has benefited considerably as the result of a recent tour when they won two of the four matches played. Keen interest is being taken in the game and a large attendance of the public is anticipated. The Bush team will be in charge of Mr. J. Suter, with Mrs. R. Cavanagh as chaperon. The team will be as follows:—Goal, Mrs. Galbraith; backs, Misses V. Edge (captain), I. Cavanagh; halves, Misses J. Ryan, I. Hawkes, P. Burgess; forwards, Misses T. Ryan, E. Ckvanagh, I. Spring, D. Lett, A. Dick. Emergencies: Miss M. Payne, Mrs. WolTand. The Bush Association has spared no effort to ensure .the comfort of the visitors and an elaborate entertainment programme has been, arranged. The ground at the Eketahuna Domain has been specially prepared.
MEETING OF WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. NORTH v. SOUTH MATCH. A meeting of the Wairarapa Hockey Association was hold in Masterton last evening, Mr. GF. Hayne (president), presiding. With reference to the New Zealand hockey conference the New Zealand Association advised that the meeting would be held in Wellington on August IT. Mr. D. Burgess was appointed delegate. The association was advised that the first Nordon Cup challenge match would be played on July 16 between D&nnevirke and Hastings (holders). In the event of Hastings retaining shield Wairarapa’s challenge would follow on July 30. The tournament committee reported 1 on the King’s Birthday tournament held at Lansdowne, which was again a huge success. The committee was accorded a vote of thanks for its efforts.
It was decided to play a third round in the junior competition and to try to get a visit from the Wellington school representatives in a match against the Wairarapa junior representatives.
The annual North v. South Wairarapa match is to be played next Saturday at Carterton. Mr. D. Burgess was appointed selector for the North. Mr. G. Fisher reported on the Wairarapa v. Wellington match, which was played at Wellington on June 20. He was accorded a vote of thanks.
The next meeting will be held on August 3 at Mr. G. Fisher’s residence, Carterton.
