PRIMARY EDUCATION.

MEETING OF CENTRAL COMMITTEE. TRUST LANDS °R ANT - The chairman; Mr. J. E. MeV. Calwell presided at a meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee, held last night. There Were also "present: Messrs W. R. Nicol, C. J. Braggins, V. Heath, F. Weiiliey, G. Bt Beebroft, R. Frater, A. V. Dixon, A. Newman. The chairman /welcomed Mr. Newman, a new member of the committee.

The headmaster (Mr. E. G. Coddington) submitted a very satisfactory report and his requirements were arranged to be dealt with. The Wairarapa Badminton Association was granted the use of the Assembly Hall for a tournament on July 24 and 25, subject to certain terms and conditions. The Trust Lands Trust advised that £75 had been placed on the estimates as a capitation grant to the schools for the current- year and £l5 for the museuni and* also that a grant of £lOO had been provided for free school books in necessitous cases for all primary schools in the Small Farm Area. The secretary was instructed to express the appreciation of the parents, children and committee to the Trust for its generosity. Mr. A. H. Medhurst, an old pupil of the school, presented a handsome painting to be hung in the school. The gift was accepted with thanks. The secretary was directed to apply to the Education Board for various repairs to be attended to. Mr. Braggins was instructed to secure a new hose for the school garden and Messrs Frater ,and Nicol undertook to obtain the requisite supply of firewood. The committee expressed sympathy with Mr. E. Holtham, the school caretaker, in his recent accident and the hope was expressed that he Would have an early recovery. The secretary was instructed to write to the Borough Council regarding storm water washing back from the road on to the school ground in Russell Street. The Parents’ Association forwarded a donation of £5 for the school library. The Trust Lands Trust granted the use of the vacant section opposite the school for football practice by the children while improvements, to the school recreation ground were being carried out. The committee expressed its thanks to the Trust.

The headmaster reported that the school attendance had been particularly good, the present roll number being 608 and that the general health of the children was good; no distress being apparent. It was stated that arrangements had been made By the Parents’ Association for a concert and dance on Tuesday next for the benefit of the school funds and it was hoped that there would be a full attendance.
