CROSSING SMASH.

WOMAN KILLED AT WAIPAKI. OTHERS HAVE NARROW ESCAPE. . GORE, June 18. A fatal accident occurred at the Waipahi Railway crossing, 16 miles north of Gore, shortly after noon today. Mrs Jessie Shaw, of Balfour, was killed when a five-seater sedan car she was driving hit a goods train. The other occupants were: John Shaw, farmer, Balfour, husband of deceased; lan Claude Butler, farmhand, Ardlussa; his mother, Mrs Rose Butler and his sister, Miss Hilda Mary Christine Butler, all of Balfour. The car was proceeding to Dunedin. It is believed that Mrs Shaw heard the train whistle but did not know from what direction it was coming. Visibility was bad owing to trees and heavy flakes of snow. The driver applied the brakes and the car stopped on the rails. It was hit in the centre arid the force of the impact caused the door on the driver’s side to fly open. Mrs Shaw was flung out, landing on her head on the cattle stop. Death was instantaneous. The other occupants had miraculous escapes, as they were imprisoned in the car, which was carried a considerable distance and then thrown clear, landing on its side. The injuries of the other occupants were merely bruises and shock. The deceased lady was 45 years of age and was born at Oamaru. She married about 12 months ago.—(P.A.)
