ARMY TO REMAIN.
THE ITALIAN OCCUPATION OF ADDIS ABABA. ONLY TEMPORARY FURLOUGH TO BE GRANTED. YOUTH MOVEMENT REVIEWED BY MUSSOLINI. ROME, May 24. The Deputy Viceroy of Abyssinia, General Graziani, surprised Italians with homes in Italy who expected an early demobilisation of soldiers who are not actually settled on the land in Abyssinia by declaring that the halfmillion troops in East Africa will be maintained at the present establishment, thus dispelling dreams of speedy family reunions. General Graziani issued a manifesto to the authorities at Addis Ababa announcing that the territorial occupation of Abyssinia will be methodically developed and that home leave will be limited to temporary furlough so as to enable troops ’to marry and take their wives back to Abyssinia, with the object, it is believed, of founding military colonies. Many unemployed-and rural workers in distressed areas in Italy are seeking free passages to Abyssinia with their families; but much preparatory work will be necessary. A feature of a review- by Signor Mussolini of Balillas (youth movement.) representing .the Boman section in the course of ceremonies throughout Italy, in which 831,399 boys and girls were drafted in preliminary Youth corps, was a Libyan Balilla troop consisting of Arab boys who marched past amid shrieks of applause, their band playing “Faeietta Nera” (‘Little Black Face’), Italy’s “Tipperary,” according to which “the sweetest girl I know” lives in Addis Ababa. Mounted en a horse, Signor Mussolini for 90 minutes Watched a procession of the Fascist Youth organisation, including girls, at a celebration of the twenty-first anniversary of Italy's entry into the World War. In a brief speech the Duee said that Italy was relying on youra to defend the Empire, and added “They will be invincible.”
