EVEREST CLIMB.
preparations well forward. MESSAGE FROM MR. RUTTLEDGE. LONDON, May 17. A copyright message from Mr. Hugh ,Ruttledge, leader of the Everest Expedition, by wireless via Calcutta from Camp 3 states that Wyn Harris and Kempson and 46 porters made a ■successful carry to Camp 4, on the north eol, on May 14. The route in places was along very steep ice and snow but was remarkably safe from avalanches. The porters went up splendidly, and only one was unable to face the steepness of the final sections. Tents were pitched on a ridge within two feet of the remains of the tent left by Mr. Shipton when he carried out his survey last year. Messrs Smythe and Shipton took advantage of the quiet conditions and with 41 porters occupied the camp for the purose of continuing the advance up the ridge within the next day or two, if weather permits. They have established wireless communication with Camp 3. They report that all the porters, who had previously given assurances of their determination to push the attack home, are in the highest spirits. Messrs Wyn Harris, Kempson, Warren, and Oliver, who occupy Camp 4, when the first party advances will form the second and third assault parties.
