ANTHONY WILDING SHIELD & NUNNELEY CASKET. CANTERBURY LEADING OVER WELLINGTON. SOME UNEXPECTED WINS. CHRISTCHURCH, February 14. At the close of the first day’s play in the inter-provincial lawn tennis matches for the Anthony Wilding Shield and Kathleen Nunnerley Casket, Canterbury, which is defending both trophies, has gained a lead over Wellington of four matches to two in each case. Fortunes fluctuated in the shield conafter Canterbury had won three the four singles matches, the Wellington second doubles pair beat Canterbury's first and it seemed likely that the day would end with honours even. Canterbury’s second pair, however, retrieved the position by scoring an equally unexpected win. The weather was dull and threatening and a very light drizzle fell for a few minutes during the second round of singles matches. Results:— Wilding Shield—Singles: C. Angas beat D. C. Coombe, 6/3, 6/0; H. A. Barnett lost to E. A. Roussell, 6/2, 2/6, 2/6, A. R. Cant beat R. McL. Ferkins, 6/4, 6/1; H. Dymond beat J. C. Charters, 6/2, 6/3. Doubles: Angas and Barnett lost to Coombe and Charters, 3/6, 5/7; Cant and Dymond beat Ferkins and Roussell, 7/5, 6/4. Canterbury 4 rubbers, 9 sets, 67 games; Wellington 2 rubbers, 4 sets, 49 games. Nunnerley Casket—Singles: Miss T. Poole beat Mrs. N. Dickson, 6/4, 6/4; Miss I. Poole lost to Miss D. Nicholls, 4/6, 4/6; Miss N. Bishop beat Mrs. A. D. Latham, 6/0, 6/2; Miss E. Rudkin beet Miss M. Howe, 6/1, 6/2. Doubles: Misses T. and I. Poole beat Miss Howe and Mrs. Latham, 6/2, 8/6; Misses Bishop and Budkin lost to Miss Nicholls and Mrs. Dickson, 2/6, 0/6.
