TENNIS TOURNEY.
WAIRARAPA FIXTURE OPENING TO-MORROW. KEEN COMPETITION EXPECTED. With' prospects of fine weather and entries in excess of those of last year indications point to the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship and handicap tourney f which will open at the Masterton Club’s courts to-morrow, proving most successful. In addition to all the leading Wairarapa players, the fixture has attracted a number of well knowjf outside competitors and the standard of play should be high. J. C. Charters, Wellington, will defend his singles title, but strong opposition, is expected from R. McL. Ferkins (Wellington), P. Hawksworth (Masterton), R'. R. T. Young (Wellington), E. A. Pearce (Wellington), J. N. Lowry (Hawke’s Bay) and M. L. Lampe (Wanganui),, last year’s runner-up. Charters and' E. Pearce, winners at the Hawke’S Bay ehampionships, aro paired in the men’s doubles, while last year’s winners, E. M. Hodder (Masterton) and R. R. T. Young, will be defending their title. Ferkins and L. H. Pollock (Wellington) appear to be a strong pair, while Hawksworth and C. H. Bowen (Gisborne) are liable to have a say in the decision of the title. Mrs. R. H. McMaster (Martinborough) l will' not be defending her title to the ladies’ championship singles, competition for which should be very keen. Misses C. S. Whisker (Wellington)', jC. Pltimmer (Gisborne), M. Purcell (Wanganui), G. Miller (Masterton), P. M. Betts (Masterton), Mrs. Campbell (Mhnawatu) and A. D. Latham (Wellington) are among the lady competitors who have every chance of winning through to the final. Misses M. Howe and Whisker are a strong pair in the ladies’ doubles, but Mesdames Latham and’ Campbell, Misses Plummer and Purcell and' Miss M; Macassey and Mrs A'. H. Ward are likely to cause trouble. The issue in the combined doubles is very open. The finalists are likely to turn up from the following pairs, Miss Macassey and Lowry, Miss Whisker and Hodder, Mrs. Campbell and Charters, Mrs Ward and Hawksworth, Miss Howe and Pearce, Miss Purcell and Hay-Campbell, Miss Plummer and Bowen.. Play will start at 850 o’clock tomorrow morning.
