STOPBANK REPAIRS.

OBJECTIONS TO ASSISTANCE BY COUNTY. A meeting of settlers from Kahutara, Pukio and Phhautea was held in Canterton recently to discuss the attitude of the Featherston County Council in respect to proposed assistance towards the cost of repairs to the Kahutara stopbank. The meeting invited the member for the district, Mr. Ben Roberts, to attend and placed before him the reasons for which it was considered that a protest should be made against the action of the Kahutara River Board in seeking assistance from the Featherston County Council, to the detriment, it was alleged, of county ratepayers. Mr. Roberts was asked to place the facts before the Minister of Public Works and the Minister of Transport, with a view to having any application from the Kahutara River Board or the Featherston County Council for assistance to repair the damaged bank held up until such time as the settlers’ side of the case nad been heard.
