SERIOUS BUSH FIRES.
Damage in southland DISTRICT. ‘ sever Al? UdueEs' Menaced. INVERCARGILL, October 2. Serious bush fires broke out in various of Southland’ to-day and fanned by a strong southerly wind caused considerable "damage to native bush. A fire swept through a wide area of native bush at Otatara. A week-end residence in its path was destroyed and three, permanent residences and two eT ibs in .Marama Avenue were in danger bt cktehiig' fire arid the furniture from most ef them, Fir,s tire also burning'ln tie Chaslan'ds district and, between Mabel Bush and Pebbly Hills four miles of manuka scrub it'ablaze. Men are standing by in case the fire spreads to the State Forest at Pebbly Hills. A fire broke out in the property opposite'the scenic reserve at Seaward Bush and the wind carried the flames across the road to the reserve, where corporation employees to-nigjit endeavouring to keep the flames in- check. Destructive fires in the Goye district caused.a great deal of damage. A large family residing near the abandoned Glendu sawmill had a dose call when flames swept, through, the scrub and small trees on to their house. They were unable to save any belongings and were actually in some danger before they were clear •of the bush. One of the party suffered, bums which required medical attention.' The family was that of John Henry Perry. At a late hour to-night the employees Of the Waitane (near Mataura) Sawmilling Company were fighting flames that were encroaching on a large v (d young tT«es r ;• J

Five fires can be seen raging in different directions.
