NEXT WEEK’S CONFERENCE

ON THE EAST AFRICAN DISPUTE. INDICATIONS OF ITALY’S ATTITUDE. DETERMINED TO UPHOLD “RIGHTS & INTERESTS.” (Received Friday, 9.35 p.m.) LONDON, August 9. "The Times” Paris correspondent says the official opening of the conference between England France and Italy on Abyssinia is fixed for August 13. "The Times” Rome correspondent says Italy will attend the conference determined to uphold her rights and interests in Abyssinia. She apparently does not expect positive results to emerge, but the usefulness and even necessity of holding the conference is ■recognised, since it will at Last finally clarify the respective positions and attitudes of England and France towards the Italo-Abyssinian dispute. An article in the "Affari Esteri,” which is believed to reflect official opinion, says: "We ass for nothing better than an assurance that England is not defending in Abyssinia, under the cloak of general principles, her own particular interests, an' that she does not w:sh for reasons of principle and gen»<el policy <..> tirffi'tite every pus-iib 1ity of Italian expansion. If England will only bring to the negotiations the same spirit as Italy and does not take up a rigid position on questions of principle and prestige, an agreement should be neither difficult nor impossible, and if so desired it can be registered as another League victory.”
