ST. MATTHEW’S SCOUTS.

BIRTHDAY GATHERING LAST NIGHT. PRESENTATION OF BADGES. The twelfth birthday of the St. Matthew’s Boy Scout Troop was fittingly celebrated at a largely attended gathering held last night in the Scout Den. The acting-Scoutmaster, Mr. V. W. Joblin, presided and the gathering, which was well organised, was most enjoyable. Following the march-in by the Scouts and the singing of the National Anthem, the Scouts renewed their Promise and repeated their Law. An inspiring address was given, by ths chairman of the Troop, the Rev. E. J. Rich. Mr. Rich also presented the following badges and service stars:—Service Stars: First year, Scoots Daynes, Mygind, Pither, H. Butcher, L. Butcher, M. Clarke, L. Brown, R. Brown, W. Brown, E. Russell; second year: P.L. B. Stewart, Scouts Martin, Pollock, Orr, Brisco; third year: Seconds Ray Clark, J. Aikman, Scout H. Harris; fourth year: P.L., N. Rippon; fifth year: P.L. Cornish, Second Lambert; sixth year: P.L. J. Thomas; seventh year: Troop Leader Fawcett; eighth year: P.L. Sanson. Second class:— Scouts Carruthers, Mygind, Wainscott. Orr, M. Clark, R. Hancock, L. Pither. Leather worker: P.L.'Stewart. Photographer: P.L. L. Cornish. Second: R. Clark. A presentation of an album of snaps taken at the recent Melbourne Jamboree, was also made to Messrs C. Robertson and L. Knight. The presentations were made by the Masterton Jamboree contingent in appreciation of the services rendered by the recipients. A most interesting film showing excellent glimpses of life at the Melbourne Jamboree was shown. The film wan kindly made available by Scout Tom Lay of Hawera. Some amusing conjuring tricks were shown by Scout L. Pither and a splendidly acted play, ‘‘Redeeming Their Characters,” given by a party of Scouts. The part? were taken as follow:—Scouts: Fred, R. Hancock; Tom, 8. Harris; Sam, M. Cole; Bob, C. Thomas. P.L. BUI Eames, D. Pollock; Farmer Woods, A Sanson; Tim Woods, B. Clarke; Tramp, L. Ferguson.

A beautiful birthday cake, generously donated by Mrs. Gawith Snr., wm cut by Bover-Leader J. C. Robinson. After a flashlight photograph had been taken by Mr. H. N. Ross, the District Scout Commissioner, Mr. C: M. Bowden, thanked all who had contributed to the success of the evening, making special mention of the following: Mrs. Gawith, for the birthday cake; Scout T. Lay, for the loan of the film; the Borough Council, for staging; St. Matthew’s Vestry, for seating accommodation; Mr. H. E. Pither, for a supply of programmes; Mr. H. N. Ross, for taking a photograph; Rover-Leader Thomas and Rovers, for general assistance and the Parents’ Committee for providing a much appreciated supper. A most ’ successful and enjoyable evening concluded with a prayer by Mr. Rich.
