HOLD-UP AT HAVRE
CAMPAIGN AGAINST ECONOMY CUTS. SEAMEN DECIDE TO CONTINUE STRIKE. COMPANY AND GOVERNMENT. PARIS, August 7. The campaign against the Government’s economy cuts has brought ths port of Le Havre to a standstill. At a meeting of seamen from all the French Transatlantic ships in the harbour it was decided to carry on the strike begun earlier in the day by the crew of the liner Champlain. If the strike continues the Colombia will be held up on Thursday, and the Lafayette on Friday. The Normandie is not due to sail until August 14, but all the crews sympathise with the men on the Champlain, while officers have refused to accept their salaries as a protest. The Champlain is due to leave for New York with 800 passengers, including 250 who are due from London, and French tennis players who are to participate in the American championships. English passengers arriving at Waterloo found that the boat-train had been cancelled, while French passengers were kept in long suspense and were unable to get food, as the kitchen staffs had left the ship. Police guarded piles of luggage on the quayside. The strikers sent a letter to the company saying that they were not civil servants and that their contract was a private one ratified under the maritime working code. The company replied to the effect that the strikers’ grievances were against the Government, and referred them to the Minister of Mercantile Marine, who declines to intervene.
