PLANTING HIGHWAYS.
BEAUTIFYING THE DISTRICT. INQUIRIES BEING MADE. Investigations are at present being carried out by a sub-committee ((Messrs A. W. Reynolds and L. Robinson) of the Masterton Beautifying Society into the possibility of planting trees on the main highways of the Wairarapa, so as to produce an avenue-like effect. Although it is proposed to concentrate first on the highway from Masterton to Featherston, other main roads, it is hoped, will also be embraced in the scheme. On the above-mentioned highway there are rather great difficulties in carrying out the scheme, as on one side of the road are the main telegraph lines between Masterton and Wellington and on the other side, for considerable distances, are the Wairarapa Power Board lines, while future extensions will probably occupy the remaining portions. It is considered that it may be possible to plant low-growing trees, such as the pepper tree is sufficient protection can be provided against stock and the committee would be pleased to receive suggestions from any one interested of an efficient and cheap way of protecting the trees while young. If a planting plan is feasible it is proposed to plant trees at least two chains apart, on both sides of the road.
