LOCAL AND GENERAL.

At the Masterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., a first offender on a charge of drunkenness was convicted and discharged. Mr. T. B. Heapy, of "Hupunui,” Greytown, who recently made important purchases of stud stock from Taranaki, has decided to throw open his farm to the public on Sunday next between 1.30 and 3 p.m. to enable those interested to see the stock.

The members of the Indian hockey team were swarmed by autograph hunters during their stay at Timaru and it has been decided in future to charge sixpence, all autograph books to be left with the manager. The money so collected will go to the Indian earthquake relief fund.—(P.A.)

The Carterton branch of the R.S.A. has selected Miss Madge Rathbone as its candidate for the Queen Carnival to be held in the near future in Carterton. The branch had previously chosen Miss Shirley Fearon but as her parents considered she was too young for the position a meeting was held yesterday and Miss Rathbone was selected.

A fire of unknown origin, which occurred on Tuesday night, at 10.15 o’clock, destroyed a stable, the property of Mr. L. McKenzie, Upper Plain. When discovered, the flames had a strong hold, and the owner was only able to save the horses. The building and contents, including five saddles, one and a half tons of chaff and one ton of hay, were destroyed*

The Labour City Council in Auckland decided last night to restore all cuts made in the salaries and wages of employees earning £3OO per annum and under. The council, on a Labour vote, also rejected a motion to restore the higher salaries. It was resolved to meet the increased cost for the year of £ll,700 by increasing the estimated deficit by that amount and not to increase rates. The council also decided to frame a by-law permitting meetings in all but busy traffic areas, and in all parks but Mt. Albert Park. The estimates adapted by the council provide for the same rates as were levied last year.—(P.A.) The following paragraph appeared in the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union’s official programme for the Hawke’s Bay v. Wairarapa representative match at Napier on June 3:— (( Hawke’s Bay junior representatives are meeting Wairarapa to-day in the latter’s territory. With several perfectly good towns scattered through the districts, the Wairarapa Union had to select Martinborough, one of its extreme outposts, as the venue of the game. The Wairarapa Union, it is said, deeply regrets the fact that there is no Bugby ground at Lake Ferry.” Two members of the visiting Wairarapa senior team who hailed from Martinborough waxed more than a little indignant at the subtle sarcasm contained in the above, but their righteous wrath was considerably appeased when at Dannevirke, on the way home, members of the Bay junior team said they had a great time at Martinborough and those who were in last year’s team remarked that they were entertained more lavishly and enjoyed themselves to a far greater degree in the southern town than when staying in Masterton.
