YOUTH TRIUMPHS

BOWES WINS KING’S PRIZE AT TRENTHAM. FIVE EQUAL FOB SECOND PLACE. R. CONGREVE RUNNER-UP. WELLINGTON, March 6. Youth triumphed over experience at Trentham to-day when the Ballinger Rifle Championship Belt, gold medal and gold badge of the National Rifle Association and the King’s Prize of £3O were won by F. Bowes, Auckland City, who is 27 years of age. An extraordinary feature of the final was that five were equal for second place and as a result of the subsequent shootoffs, this was filled by R. Congreve, Old Navals. Congreve is 21 years old and both he and Bowes competed at the national meeting this year for the third time.

i With his final ten rounds at 900 yds., Bowes made 46, this giving him an aggregate of 464 out of a possible 'of 500. Congreve, W. N. Masefield (Blenheim), F. H. James (Napier), L. G. Benton (Featherston) and A. R. Wills (Invercargill) all bad scores of 458, making a shoot-off necessary. Among these five marksmen Masefield shot into third place, with James fourth, Benton fifth and Wills sixth. For the highest individual score in the King’s Prize match, the Rifle Challenge Cup is awarded and a shoot-off was also necessary to decide this Congreve, Bowes and L. H. Proffitt (Napier) each had 46. Five shots were fired, Proffitt making the best score with 24 and winning the cup. Twenty-five teams competed in the champions teams match, which was fired in the morning. This was won by Now Plymouth No. 1. The service championship, the final match of which was also fired during the morning was won by R. H. Nicholl, Petone. With his final ten rounds application at 600 yards Nicholl made 41, this bringing his aggregate up to 200 out of a possible of 265. F. A. Hiscock, Christchurch, finished second with 198. -(P.A.)
