The directors of Messrs Murray Roberts and Co., Ltd., have voted £250 for the relief of distress in centres where the firm doing business. Reserved judgment was delivered at Palmerston North yesterday by Mr. G. L. Stout, S.M., in the ease in which the New Zealand “Sunday News” Publishing Co., Ltd., was charged recently with breaches of the Gaming Act in respect to coupons in the paper instituting a competition under which the public were invited to forecast in each of eight races at certain race meetings. Fines of £5 Is were imposed on each of two charges, the others being dismissed. The Magistrate held that the prizes offered were payable “on an event or a contingency of or relating to a horse race.” It was immaterial that some other legitimate business such as the sale of the newspaper was connected with the competition.
