QUEEN CARNIVAL.

ACTIVITIES OF COMPETING SECTIONS. SUPPGUT FOR. THE FARMERS’ CANDIDATE., Of many activities planned on behalf of the Farmers’ Queen candidate, Miss N. Morrison, the usual shop day at the Perry Street depot to-morrow will be in charge, on this occasion,, of members of the Women’s Institutes. On August 28 the candidate will be hostess at a social and bridge afternoon at the home of the Misses Morrison, Lansdowne. On Wednesday, August 29, Miss Morrison and her committee of youthful helpers, will take charge of the shop day at the Perry Street depot. On the afternoon of the l same day, a bridge phrty is to be held by members of the Women’s Division, in the Savage Club Rooms. On September 4, a fancy dress dance for children and adults is to be given at Rangitumau by a. committee of ladies of that district. Many other functions and fixtures are 'being planned in support of Miss Morrison's candidature. MOVIE STAB BALL. ATTRACTION ON THURSDAY. Considerable interest is being taken in the Movie Star Cabaret which is to be held in the Municipal Hall on Thursday night, in furtherance of the candidature of Miss Edith Ralph, the Y.M.O. nominee. The unusual nature of the cabaret will provide- plenty of scope for originality and no doubt there will be many surprising impersonations. There will be several novel items including “Play to me, Gypsy,” a song and dance in costume by outstanding artists, accompanied (by a specially trained orchestra, an exhibition of the Carrioca, the very latest dance, and a eharming ballet by a troup of youthful performers. Two orchestras, the Whoopee Boys and the Blue River Dance Band, will provide the music. Business firms have undertaken to specially decorate the cubicles, which will be available to patrons at 2s 6d per person. These will greatly enhance the scene of gaiety. Carnival favours will be distributed at' supper. Prizes are being offered for the 'best impersonations of movie stars, male or female. Table and cubicles may be ‘booked at the Arts & Crafts. A shop day is to be held for the Y.M.C.A. candidate to-morrow, for which donations will be gratefully received. BOTTLE AND BAG DRIVE. The Y.M.C.A. Carnival Committee is or ffa.nising a bottle and rag drive this week in aid of the Y.M.C.A. Queen candidate, Miss Eidith Ralph. The Y.M.C.A. boys have taken up this effort with enthusiasm and will canvass the town for these articles. The cooperation of the townspeople is sought in encouraging the boys in their effort to help keep the red flag at the top ot the mast and at the same time help the institution that means such a great deal to them. Collectors will be wearing official badges.

BILIJARDS AND SNOOKBR.

Over 40 players took part in a billiards and snooker tourney held in the soldiers’ Club last night in aid of the Business candidate (Miss M. Collier) In the Y.M.C.A. Queen Carnival. Some keenly contested and interesting games were witnessed. The winning snooker pair was H. Mclntyre and H R Evans.
