BOROUGH WORK.
REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH. .At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the Borough Engineer, Mr. C. R. Mabson, reported as follows on the work carried out during June:— Streets: Maintenance work has been carried out in Columba Road, Makora Road, Michael and Blair Streets, and the north end of Cricket Street has been scarified, regraded, gravelled and narrow path formed on the west side. A new footpath in Crayne Street north side from Chapel to Queen Street has been completed. A start has been made with the construction of the new roadway from northern approach to Hope Street. Sussex Street is being scarified and regraded preparatory to tar sealing. New path is being formed in bonald Street on east side between Vivian and Devon Streets. The grass flanks of Crayne Street have been graded off, and section next to new path has been metalled. Water and Drainage: During the month 1 new service and 2 renewals were put in. All street domes were painted and defective fire hydrant signs replaced. Building Permits: During the month 3 permits were issued having an estimated value of £1540, the fees thereon amounted to £5 10s. For the corresponding period last year 6 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £1467. BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Borough Inspector (Mr. T. A. Russell) reported as follows: —No case of infectious disease was notified during the month. Plumbing and'Drainage: Six sewer connections were installed, and 28 plumbing and drainage permits were issued, the usual testing and inspection being carried out. Dangerous Goods: Three underground tanks together with the necessary pumping installations were tested. Traffic: Eighteen applicants for drivers’ licenses were examined, two failing to pass the test. Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £362 4s Bd. Twenty-three persons were convicted and fined for various breaches of traffic regulations. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager (Mr. James Learmonth) reported, inter alia, as follows:— Gas manufactured during June was 4,553,000 c.ft., being a decrease of 1.2 per cent, over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows a decrease of 3.9 per cent. The Government Inspector visited the works on June 30. Calorific value of the gas 466 B.T.U. Sulphuretted hydrogen present. PARK CUSTODIAN’S REPORT.
The Park Custodian (Mr. H. Sturgeon) reported as follows:—The general' work of the park has been carried out satisfactorily during the month. The planting of 200 rhododendrons near the gun, sophora and flowering eucalypti in fenced off portion in horse paddock, cyathia medullaris around the lily pond and also refills in Allan’s Avenue have been done. Mawley Park has had a good clean up and the planting of cyathia medullaris round, the lake and on the island,* lawsonianas along Oxford Street; 50 native trees in back portion of the park, and also a .collection of 50 olearias along the bank by the main road have been carried out. Grubbing of part of Allan’s Avenue has been completed. The pruning of street trees is progres-, sing satisfactorily.
