MASTERTON W.E.A.

GENERAL PUBLIC’S APAfTHY DEPLORED. COMMENT AT THE ANNUAL MEETING, Regret at the apparent apathy of the general public towards the activities of the association was expressed by the chairman, Mr. H. C. L. Robinson, at the annual meeting of the Masterton W.E.A. last night. There was a fair attendance of members.

In again agreeing to accept the position of vice-president, Mr. Robinson said that the attitude of the Masterton public towards the W.E.A. was practically the same as that of the rest of the Dominion. At the present time it was very difficult to obtain support for the association and about all they could hope for was to maintain its existence in the hope that its essential usefulness would become apparent .to the public and that more people would take advantage of the opportunities thus afforded of studying the important social question pressing bn mankind. He would have been glad if someone else could have been found to take his position, observed Mr. Robinson, who went on to give an outline of the association’s activities last season.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. T. Jordan; vice-president, Mr. H. C. L. Robinson; auditor, Mr. E. K. Eastwood; secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. A. Carmine; librarian, Miss A. Bradbury; committee, Messrs M. G. Mackay, J. A. Kennedy, R. Wadhams, G. W. Moriee, J. Conly, J. A. Kennedy, Misses Bradbury, McGrath and Mrs. Fouhy.

A general discussion took place concerning activities for the coming season and it was resolved to invite Messrs W. Nash, M.P., and H. von Haast, of Wellington, to address a Masterton meeting, as soon as possible after Easter, on the recent conference of Pacific relations. It was also decided to organise a series of interesting and instructive lectures and debates during the winter months.
