LONDON’S POPULATION.

UNDER TEN PER CENT. POVERTY STRICKEN. IMPROVEMENT IN POSITION. (Received Thursday, 9.15 p.m.) LONDON, March 1. The percentage of London’s population living below the poverty line is nine and a half per cent, as compared with 30 per cent, in 1889. The total to-day is 490,000, of whom 54,000 are in institutions. Unemployment is usually the cause of poverty, also insufficient wages. Two-thirds of the working class families have wages 19s above the minimum. There are 210,000 Jews in Greater London, as compared with 65,000 in 1889.
