MONETARY INQUIRY.
FIRST SITTING YESTERDAY.
MR. F. LANGSTONE ADDED TO COMMITTEE.
WELLINGTON, February 13.
The Parliamentary Monetary Committee held its first sitting to-day. Mr. J. A. Nash presided, and the only absentees were the Hon. W. Downie Stewart and Messrs F. W. Schramm and J. W. Munro, who sent apologies. The proceedings were not open to the Press. The members of the Committee were welcomed by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) and the Minister of Finance (the Rt. Hon. J. G,. Coates), the Prime Minister announcing that Mr. F. Langstone, M.P. for Waimarino, had been appointed to the Committee on the nomination of the Labour Party.
After a discussion of the Order of Reference it was decided to adjourn until February 27. In the meantime members of the Committee will study the various proposals which have already been submitted to them.
It was decided to invite written evidence and to notify that if any person so desires he may appear before the Committee for examination. The Committee will hear evidence in other centres if it thinks that the number of •witnesses in any centre warrants its travelling. During the hearing of evidence the proceedings will be open to the Press and the public. The Committee will sit daily from 9.30 a.m. to d p.m.. and from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Committee decided to send a special invitation to Major Douglas to submit a draft of any proposals he might have and to fix a time and place when it will be convenient for him to appear before the Committee.
