RACE FOR LIFE.
MAORI CHILDREN IN PERIL ON BRIDGE ALMOST CAUGHT BY EXPRESS. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 13. A race for life by four Maori children and .their escape from an onrushing express engine was an incident that startled passengers when the New Plymouth express this morning was nearing Lepperton. The children, on their way to school, were crossing a railway bridge 55ft long and 20ft above the stream. The express had rounded a curve and commenced to descend a deelevity of 100 yards to the bridge when the driver was horrified to see children crossing the bridge on the sleepers He blew two blasts on his whistle and applied the brakes.
