SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. GBEYTOWN. (“The Age” Special). Mfs. W. Orr (Ahikouka), is visiting relatives in the Auckland district. Mrs. H. Stunell, Senr. (Kaitara Road), who- is a patient in Greytown Hospital; is making splendid progress towards recovery. Mrs. D. P. Loasby and Miss O. Loasby are visitors to Otaki and the West Coast district. Miss Naomi Hodge, of Papawai, has been appointed to the nursing staff of Otaki Sanatorium, and takes up her duties this week. Misses Rita Morison (Greytown) and Sybil Judd (Stonestead), are passengers this week on the Wanganeßa on that’ ship’s trip to the West Coast Bounds. Mr. Quentin Donald Senr., and Mr. J. G. Donald (Tauherenikau), returned on Monday from a visit to the Royal Show at Auckland. Mr. J. G. Donald had' marked success in the championships and other classes for Ayrshirebred cattle. Mr. O. A. Cadwallader (Ahikouka), who was a visitor to the Royal Show at Auckland, where he was awarded ■fitst prize in the two-year-old Friesian heifer class, is visiting Hawke’s Bay before returning to Wairarapa. Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Walden (Timaru) and Mr. and Mrs. S. L Walden are visiting Mrs. H. W. Walden senr. ■(McMaster Streep. Miss Flo' Best is at present a paztiont in Greytown Hospital. { Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Anker are on a holiday trip to Wellington. Apple Picking. Apple picking commenced this week in Greytown, and large quantities of fruit win, for the next month or two, be railed from the district. The Greytown Fruit-Growing Company alone expects to export 10,000 cases of apples this antumn. The crop this year is a very good one and has not been great--ly affected by the vagaries to date of the season’s weatier.

Rifle Shooting. The Qreytown Rifle Club held its annual service competitions on Saturday, when some excellent performances were recorded. Possibles were made 'by Riflemen J. C. Feast, S. I. Walden and H. C. Trotman in the grouping competition, by T. Orr in application shooting at 200 yards, and by R. G. Hills, H. Trotman and A. G. Rhodes in snap-, shooting. The former Wairarapa champion, Rifleman T. Orr, returned to form by winning the competition with 121’ points, R. G. Hills 119 and J. C. Feast--116 being second and third. Swimming Club.

After several postponements caused' by heavy rain, the Grey town Club, got its carnival off on Monday night; The club has a large and enthusiastic membership and despite moist overhead' conditions there was a good attendance and keen competition between Whlling- ' ton and Wairarapa swimmers. Plunket Society.

The usual monthly meeting of the Greytown sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held on Monday evening last, there being present: Mesdtunes J F. Thompson (chair), Knell, Gregor, Richards, A. Haigh, Kiernan and Bull and Miss Merlet. Lengthy correspondence received by the Carterton branch of the society relative to Miss Pattrick’s resignation was read and the delegates to the Carterton branch reported that Mesdames F. M. B. Trapp and Wills had been appointed as delegates for Carterton and its sub-branch, Greytown, to the conference to be held in Dunedin on February 22. PIRINOA. (“The Age” Special). Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hodder, Tuhitarata, were recent visitors to Wanganui. Mr. J. H. Tilson has returned from a visit to Hastings. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hodder have taken up their residence at Te Hopai. Owing to the heavy rain experienced in this district during the past few days the Palliser Bay road has been blocked for vehicular traffic. Elders Christopherson and Woolley are visiting this district The usual weekly social of the Young Men’s Mutual Association was held on Saturday night, there being a very large attendance. The president, Mr. Riwai, presided and items were contributed by Miss Taurau, Elder Christopherson and R. Taurau. Music for dancing was played by a local orchestra. A' most enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hodder recently. Musical and dancing items were given, the following contributing to the programme:—Misses Olive Hardie and Kitty Smith, Mr. and Mrs. W. Sutherland, Messrs Don Sutherland, Albert Weir, E. Laurence and Campbell Smith, while the audience was greatly pleased with the rendering of old time music by Mr. C. Hodder on the accordeon. A local orchestra supplied the dance music.
