CARTERTON AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. W. Fisher) presiding. The treasurer reported receipts in District Fund Account, £6BB 8s 7d, and. £251 7s I2id in Gasworks Account. Accounts amounting to £846 Us 7d in District Fund and £309 2s 8d Gasworks Account w r ere passed. The gas consumed for July was 473,700 cubic feet, of a value of £203 Ils Bd, as compared with 487,■500 cubic feet, value £206 15s lOd for the corresponding month last year. The Wairarapa P. and A. Society applied for October 26 to be declared a public holiday from 10 a.m. The request was referred to the Tradesmen’s Association. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that Mr. D. J. Cameron, Masterton, and Mr. W. Howard Booth, Carterton, had been appointed members of the Assessment Court for the purpose of the farm land list for the Borough of Carterton. The Works Committee reported that the water races in the borough were to receive attention. The Gas Committee reported that the delivery of coke from the works be evenly distributed monthly among the carriers desirous of undertaking the work. The boundary fence at the works is to be erected with wire netting. The Gas Manager reported having carbonised 37 tons 18ewt. of coal for a gross return of 516,300 cubic feet of gas, an average of 13,-600 cubic feet per ton. Sales per Consumers’ meters were 473,700 cubic fefct; used at works, 6800 cubic feet, and SZOO- cubic feet at the Borough Office. The Overseer reported having attended to patch metalling during the month. Grass lhad been grubbed in Kent Street footpath, and the worst holes in Harriet Street had been filled in. Three water connections had been put in and one crossing in Clifton Avenue. The Inspector reported that one drainage extension, and -the re-laying of a drain had been completed; and two eases of breaches of the parking regulations were under notice. One head of cattle was impounded, and two notices served to cut back overhanging hedges. Trees had b£en trimmed in the side streets. . W
