MARKED CALVES.
PRICES AT THE HAWERA FAIR. An interesting report was made recently by Mr. C. M. Hume, Dominion Supervisor of Herd Testing, on the second Marked Calf Fair, held at Hawera on February 14, when a catalogue of 149 calves was offered. “I am of opinion,” Mr. Hume states, {‘that though the best calves were as good as last year, the average was not up to last year’s standard. It appeared to fine that many of the calves had not been done sufficiently well and in addition a number of lines through being too mixed in Considering, the general economic position, I regard the prices as quite satisfactory, the average for the 114 calves being £3 7s (id against £4 5s last year. The top price of £6 was paid for Lot No. 11, bred by Mr. R, E. Harrison, of Kapuni. ’ ’
The next best prices were £5 10s, £5 ss, and £4 10s. Apart from Taranaki buyers, calves were sold to buyers from Te Arolia, Dannevirke and Southland. Prior to the fair, a competition was held for the Challenge Cup presented to the vendor of the best lot of' five calves offered. The lots were judged on type, with butterfat production of dams the deciding factor in the event of a tie on type. The first, second and third lots were sold first, irrespective of the ballot place in the catalogue, and they were sold without reserve. The judges were Mr. R. J. Linn, a prominent Jersey breeder and Mr Frederick Mills, a well-known Ayrshire breeder. The awards were- Mr' R E Harrison (for Lot No. 11 above men" tinned), 1; Mr, F. Hoskin Mr W Bourse, 3,
