COUNTY AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of tha Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday, Councillor R. Judd (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Councillors W. A. Miller, D. Bennett, F. W. Parry, A. Forsberg and J. H. MacDonald. The Treasurer submitted a finance report showing a debit balance of £3l'4 10s 2d and accounts were passed for payment amounting to £317 18s 3d.

The Eketahuna County Council wrote expressing appreciation of the assistance of the chairman in offering to undertake an inspection of work under Scheme 48.

The District Engineer requested to know the approximate amounts of subsidies that would be claimed for payment by March 31 for the various main highways. The Clerk stated that thia information had been supplied. A circular was received from the New Zealand Counties Association in regard to the question of amalgamation of bodies and it was decided that no definite action could be taken by this council at the present time.

The Commissioner of Crown Lands requested that steps be taken to revest in the Crown for the purposes of the Small Farm Scheme, a reserve section at Kaipororo and the Clerk intimated the course to be taken and was directed to proceed accordingly. The chairman was deputed to interview the Commissioner of Crown Lands in regard to certain reserve lands required by the council. Councillors resented the recent criticism in the Press by Councillor Falloon, of Masterton County Council, regarding the condition of Dagg’s Road and it was reported that this road was in fair condition for a clay road, with the exception that a small slip temporarily diverted water across the road, which was thoroughly repaired by one man in half a day. The road was well graded within the past twelve months. The Overseer reported satisfactoryprogress of all work and arrangements were discussed and decided for immediate future work.
