(To the Editor.) Sir,—Under date December 1, 1932, written at sea, H. J. Wenham, managing director of the New Zealand Scouring and Carbonising Company, Ltd., in an open letter to all shareholders, states: “I have seen New Zealand lamb sold at SmitMield at prices ranging from 4d to 5 l-Bd, retail prices on the same day being from lljd to 4s 7d per lb., irrespective of grade. For mutton, sold at 2}d to 3}d, I was asked Is 3d per lb. for hindquarters. At the same time, I have seen New Zealand lamb sold as prime English, at Is lOd per lb. The dairy section appears possibly the best served, but even here abuses are rife. Several convictions last month were made against retailers selling Russian butter as New Zealand, or Empire. The blending of inferior butters and selling as super quality is much in evidence.” May I inquire, Mr. Editor, why the Meat Board has ceased to publish retail prices! Is is due to the above prottsf Also, if the above are correct (and I see no reason why they should not be), do the Meat Board and Dairy Control Board justify their existence! Thanking you for valuable space.—l am ete., J. L. HEUKLEB. Ihuraua, December 22.
