LATE MR. G. C BENNINGTON.
FUNERAL IN MASTERTON YESTERDAY. There was a large and representative attendance of mourners at the funeral of the late Mr. G. C. Bennington in Masterton yesterday. Amongst those present were representatives of the Masterton Borough Council, Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.P., and Mr. A. E. Bate, superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School. Services at the house in Wrigley Street and at the graveside in the Masterton Cemetery were conducted by the Rev. E. O. Blamires. In an address at the graveside, Mr. Blamires spoke of the late Mr. Bennington as a link of association with an early pioneering past. His father was said to have been the second person buried in the Masterton Cemetery. Mr. Bennington had been a good citizen, who had taken his place in the life of the community with benefit to all with whom ho” had associated. The pallbearers were representatives of the Borough Council, the Methodist Chureh, the Orange Lodge and relatives, including a grandson of the late Mr. Bennington.
In the Masterton Methodist Church yesterday morning, the Rev. E. O. Blamires referred to the death of Mr. G. C. Bennington, who was one of the earliest scholars in the original Sunday School, started in 1856 by Mr. Henry Jones. Mr. Bennington’s pioneer days were referred to, and his constant association with the local chureh and Sunday School, except for a break during an absence from the district. He had attended the last gathering in connection with the Sunday School anniversary in November last. The sympathy of the Church was expressed to the relatives, mingled with appreciation of the quiet fidelity by which Mr. Bennington ’s long association with the Church was marked.
