CHILLED BEEF.
. POSSIBILITIES OF EXPORT TO BRITAIN. EXPERIMENTAL SHIPMENT IN PROSPECT. FARMERS’ UNION URGES RESEARCH. Possibilities of developing an early export of chilled beef to Great Britain were discussed by the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union on Friday. It was stated that an experimental shipment was to be made shortly and it was urged that the trade should be facilitated by research. A letter from the East Coast Sheepowners’ Union, urging that the Meat Board should conduct adequate research on behalf of the frozen meat industry, pointed out that both South Africa' and Australia had lately put chilled beef on the English market. Mr. T. R. Barter strongly criticised the Meat Board for having failed to finance and promote research and advised asking the Scientific Research Department to take up meat industry research. Mr. J. C. Cooper said the time had come to take up in earnest the question of exporting ehilled beef. Several ships now trading to New Zealand were capable of doing the journey Home in about thirty days, only three days more than used to be taken from the Biver Plate to London. Special equipment in fhe works and on the ships would be needed, and ships would have to be loaded and despatched quickly. He was sure chilled beef could now be sent Home successfully. Mr. J. M. James said he understood that one works was going to send Home a trial shipment of chilled beef 'in January. Mr. H. Bennett and other members contended that an end should bo made <yf the long and costly delays in loading ships in New Zealand. It was agreed that the whole question be referred to the Meat Board and the Scientific Research Department.
