Owing to the illness of the lecturer there will be no W.E.A. lecture tonight. Addressing a meeting of some three hundred suppliers of the Heretaunga Co-operative Dairy Company on Saturday in support of his candidature for re-election to the Dairy Produce Board, of which he is ehairman, Mr W. A. lorns had a very favourable reception. The meeting unanimously passed a vote of thanks and confidence in the Dairy Board and in Mr lorns as their representative. Arrests carried out by detectives simultaneously at two hotels and a tobaeconist’s shop caused something of a stir in Wellington on Saturday afternoon. The three men arrested with another arrested earlier in the afternoon will appear in the Police Court on charges connected with bookmaking. At the New Zealander and Alhambra Hotel barmen were arrested, and at the tobacconist’s the occupier was taken in charge. They were released on bail.—(PA.) Excellent entries are coming to hand for the ping pong tournament to be held on Tuesday, 6th September, in the Masterton Municipal Hall in aid of the Mayor’s Belief Fund. The Wairarapa championships are to be decided and the contest should prove a particularly keen one, as in addition to Wairarapa players, a number of Wellington champions will be competing. The tournament is being held under the auspices of the Masterton Winter Sports Club. On Saturday evening the club’s B team defeated a team from from Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd. by 31 matches to 12. Amongst local followers of football, a great deal is to be heard in condemnation of the Rugby rule at present in force which forbids the replacement of injured players. One veteran supporter, after watching the recent Wai-rarapa-Wanganui match, declared himself so disgusted with the conditions in which Wairarapa had to play one man short that he had serious thoughts of transferring his support to hockey. Encountered on Saturday, after the game in which the Manawhenua. team playing Wairarapa was reduced to thirteen men, the same veteran proclaimed himself more disgusted than ever. He said he did not think he would ever go to look at another Rugby match until the non-replaeement rule was abolished.
