AMATEUR BOXING.
SUCCESS OF MASTERTON COMPETITORS. TOURNEY AT PALMERSTON NORTH. J. Ford, Duncan Smith and Page, three well-known Masterton boxers, took part in an amateur boxing tournament, held at the Showgrounds, Palmerston North, on Saturday night. Ford put up a splendid performance in defeating Hirst, a much heavier man. He forced the fight all the way, and, pasting Hirst with straight lefts and hard right-crosses, ran out a good winner in each round. The bout in which Smith beat Repsch was of the all-in class. Smith used his left to advantage and scored consistently to his opponent’s face and Repsch was floored twice. Hopkins, Feilding, a particularly clever boxer, scored a narrow win over Page in a crisp, clean encounter. J. Davies (Pahiatua), who is to meet Hawker, Wellington provincial title holder, at Carterton next Monday night, is to undergo a week’s training at Allison’s Gymnasium in preparation for the light.
