The death took place at the Masterton Hospital on Monday of Mrs Cherry, wife of Mr. A. G. Cherry, of Featherston. A husband and infant child are left. The engagement is announced of Daphne May, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs C. H. Loader, Taueru, to Gordon Hector, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs H. S. Mclsaac, Tinui, Masterton. The death took place at Carterton yesterday of Mr. August Nelson, a very early resident of the district. He is survived by a widow and a grownup family of one son and four daughter®. The death occurred in Wellington on Sunday of Mr. William Ramsay, father cf Mr. P. G. Ramsay, of Masterton, and late of Martinborough. The late Mr. Ramsay was for some years a resident of the Wairarapa. A New Plymouth Press Association message reports that the death occurred at Stratford last night of Mr. Jonas Masters, aged 76 years, founder cf the firm of Messrs Masters Ltd., and father of the Hon. Robert Masters, Minister of Education. The death of Lord Ebury, as the result of injuries received from a fall in the hunting field in March, is reported in a cablegram from London. Lord Ebury was known as “the shopkeeping peer.” He became chairman of the Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd. Mr. Leonard Cronin has been appointed editor of the “New Zealand Tablet.” Mr. Cronin was at one time on the literary staff of the “New Zealand Times” and was later on the “Sun,” Auckland. He had acted as Parliamentary reporter for the “Otago Daily Times,” during the past few sessions.—(P.A.) The death occurred in the Masterton Hospital yesterday, after a brief illness, of Mrs. Burch, wife of Mr. H. Burch, of Ponatahi. The late Mrs. Burch, who was 48 years of age, was school mistress at Ponatahi for the past 3| years. She was an active member of the Methodist Church in Greytown, and also in the Manawatu district, where she resided for a number of years before coming to the Wairarapa. She is survived by a husband, one daughter and one son. The funeral will take tomorrow, at Masterton. The death is announced of Mrs Emma Haggett, of Wanganui, who celebrated her hundredth birthday on March 17 of this year. Mrs Haggett came to New Zealand in the sailing ship British Empire in June, 1844, and with her husband, the late Mr. Daniel Haggett, landed at Lyttelton. Mrs Haggett was an active church worker among the Congregationalists, and helped to collect funds to build three churches. She leaves three sons and two daughters, 24 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren. A very enjoyable Flag Bridge afternoon was spent by the members and friends of the Masterton Croquet Club at the residence of Mrs G. H. Edwards, Essex Street, yesterday. The function was in honour of the president, Mrs Macomish, who will shortly be leaving Masterton. She was presented with a leather handbag. The secretary voiced the sentiments of the members in their regret at losing such an excellent and reliable president; one who had never missed a meeting and was ever ready to further the interests of the club. Mrs Macomish had been president for three years. The winners of the cards were Mesdames Rushton, Coleman, and Donnelly. Cheers for Mrs Macomish and the singing of “She's a Jolly Good Fellow,” brought a memorable occasion to a close.
