BIG UPHEAVAL.

ON FLOOR OF INDIAN OCEAN. SEVERE EARTHQUAKES. PERTH, May 17. An upheaval occurred on the floor of the Indian Ocean less than 400 miles from Perth at 9.18 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Government Astronomer, Dr. Curlewis. The maximum shocks, which continued for fourteen minutes, caused the boom of the seismograph to swing repeatedly about seven inches. (From calculations made at the Riverview Observatory, Sydney, Father O'Leary estimates the earthquake took place less than 3000 miles to the northwest of Sydney, most probably in the Sea of Celebes.)
