REBELS HAND OVER FUNCHAL TO GOVERN MEM'. BOMBARDMENT BREAKS REBEL MORALE. NO INJURIES RESULT FROM SHELLING. United Press Association.—By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) MADEIRA, May 2. The revolt has ended. The Ministry announces that Funchal was handed over to the Government to-day. A later message states that the rebel leaders took refuge in the British Consulate. The warship Vasco da Gama’s bombardment, though it broke the rebel morale, caused no casualties. Marines and bluejackets landed to protect British lives and property. Foreign residents and visitors were unharmed and the civilians uninjured. AN EARLIER REPORT. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 1. A Funchal message, timed 3.10 o’clock this afternoon, states that rebel leaders claim to have repulsed the bombardments and attacks in four places. The transports are unable to approach the island owing to artillery fire from the shore. Some Government forces were wounded and a destroyer towed to her base.
