FOUR SHOPS BURNT.

FIRE AT TANEATUA. WHAKATANE, May 2. A 1 fire at Taneatua at 1.30 o’clock this morning destroyed four shops—G. C. Peebles, general store keeper; E. M. (Breyenton, butcher; McCall, saddler; and Mrs Sutherland, milliner. The contents of McCall’s and Sutherland’s shops were removed to safety. The buildings were valued at over £2OOO, land the contents of Peebles’ and Broyenton’s shops are estimated at £2OOO. Breyenton’s stock was not insured.— (P.A.)
