DISABLED AT SEA.

JAPANESE FREIGHT STEAMER IN DISTRESS. CREW OF FORTY ON BOARD. LIFEBOATS SMASHED. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. (Received Monday, 9.5 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, November 2. The Japanese freighter, the Seiyo Maru, with a crew of forty on board, is wallowing helplessly in the North Pacific, south-west of the Aleutians. On Sunday night the vessel was in a sinking condition, with the rudder gone and lifeboats smashed by heavy seas. She radioed her position to the steamer California, which started to go to the rescue but later hove to in a full gale. She will proceed to the Seiyo Maru when the wind moderates.
