REDUCTIONS OF PERMANENT STAFF. STATEMENT BY MINISTER (By Telegraph.—“ The Age" Special.) WELLINGTON, September 30. Cobbe, Minis, ter of Defence, gave a brief interim indication in the House today, of the steps being taken to absorb men whose employment will be affected by the curtailment of the defence policy. One measure of recognition entailed the conversion of the Pay and Ordinance Corps and the general duty sections from a military to a civil basis, which will enable >the Department to release a number of men who would, wherever this course was practicable and as vacancies arose, be absorbed rnto the general public service.
