RUGBY TOURNEYS.
SOUTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS. A MERITORIOUS WIN. INVERCARGILL, August 25. The annual South Island secondary school Rugby tournament commenced here to-day in brilliant sunshine and before a large attendance. ‘ In the first match Otago defeated Christchurch by 14 to 3, after a rather disappointing display by both teams. The second match, between Southland and Timaru was highly exciting and spectacular, Southland gaining a meritorious win almost on the call of time, the final scores being seven to five in favour of the. home team. The tourney will be concluded on Thursday.—(P.A.) ~ WAIRARAPA DEFEATED. CONTESTS AT PALMERSTON NORTH. PALMERSTON N., August 15. At the primary schools Rugby tournament, Manawatu beat Wairarapa by 15 to 5, and Wanganui beat Wellington by 8 to 3.—(P.A.) INTER-COLLEGE GAMES. NELSON DEFEAT WELLINGTON. CHRISTCHURCH, August 25. By beating Wellington College by 11 to 5 to-day in the annual inter-col-legiate tournament, Nelson College won the contest. Playing for the wooden spoon, Christs College and Wanganui Collegiate School drew, with 14 points each. Next year the tourney will be played .at Wanganui. In the" Welling-ton-Nelson game, Wellington drew first blood, Sadder going over and Carlson converted. Hooper then scored for Nelson and half-time saw the position unchanged. Nelson drew to the front with a penalty goal by Newman. Just on time, Buttress scored for Nelson r Newman converted. During the progress' of the game Nelson lost two men by injuries. Louisson was replaced by Burge and Richards by Powrie. In the second game, Christs College scored first, Rolleston getting over, but within a few minutes Innes equalised for Wanganui. With another try by Innes, converted by Glendining, Wanganui took the lead, which was reduced when McCracken landed a penalty for 'Christs College. Kemp then scored for the visitors and McCracken put over another penalty for the local side; making the scores 11 to 9 in Wanganui’s favour at the interval. Shortly after resuming, Coleman scored for the visitors and a few minutes later Kerr scored a try for the home side, which McCracken' converted, thus equalising the tallies. The standard of play in both games was excellent and the pace was a cracker throughout.—'(P.A.)
