BUDGET DEBATE.
HON. A. J. STALLWORTHY’S CONTRIBUTION. THE POST OFFICE PROFITS & RESERVES. (By Telegraph—“ The Age” Special.) WELLINGTON, August 6. The Financial Debate occupied the whole attention of the House of Representatives to-day and had not concluded when the House adjourned at mid-night. The only Minister who contributed to the discussion was the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, who dealt with the suggestion of the Hon. W. Downie Stewart that the Government could relieve the tax payers of a portion of their burden by taking more of the Post Office profits and some of its £3,000,000 reserve fund. Mr Stallworthy declared that if years ago anyone had suggested that the railways would ever meet with overwhelming competition, it would have been regarded as ridiculous, but motor transport had brought that Department into a bankrupt condition and the time might come when the Post and Telegraph Department would face a serious financial lo’ss through the development in means of communication enabling everyone to receive and send messages with privately-owned instruments. The Post Office should conserve its reserves.
